AI Detectors

General Statement Templates

Option A

“Our AI writing detection model may not always be accurate (it may misidentify both human and AI-generated text) so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student. It takes further scrutiny and human judgment in conjunction with an organization's application of its specific academic policies to determine whether any academic misconduct has occurred."

Option B (Current English Department Statement)

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, directly copying someone else’s words, phrases, ideas, sentence arrangement, or essay. Incorrect or missing source information is also considered plagiarism. If students are in doubt whether they should use or document a source, contact the instructor before turning in the assignment. Cheating includes, but it is not limited to, using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or aids, including AI software.

Consequences for students in this class who plagiarize or cheat will be as severe as failing the course. All students found plagiarizing or cheating, regardless of the amount of material, will be subject to these consequences and referred to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. All student essays, and any other work the instructor requests, will be examined by Turnitin software or other plagiarism and cheating detection software. If the instructor deems it necessary to rule out academic misconduct, the student may be required to provide additional information, explanations, or defend assignments submitted as their own work.

Option C (UTC AI Statements)

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Use Prohibited: All submitted coursework must be your own original work. Inclusion of proper citations, using the accepted citation style for this course, is required. The use and/or inclusion of any materials derived by a Generative AI tool is strictly prohibited. Failure to follow any of the aforementioned guidelines constitutes a violation and will result in a referral to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Limited Use Permitted: All submitted coursework must be your own original work. Inclusion of proper citations, using the accepted citation style for this course, is required. While the use and/or inclusion of any materials derived by a Generative AI tool is generally prohibited, you may be given written permission to use such a tool for one or more assignments. Any coursework which uses Generative AI will include explicit directions on when and how to use such tools, as well as how to properly cite the resource. Failure to follow any of the aforementioned guidelines constitutes a violation and will result in a referral to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Use with Acknowledgement: In this course, you will be permitted to use Generative AI tools. However, any coursework in which you utilize Generative AI must include proper citations, using the accepted citation style for this course.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Free Use: In this course, you will be permitted to use Generative AI tools to assist you in completing your coursework. You are not required to cite these sources. Please let me know if you have any questions on how to best use these tools to aid in your learning.

Winona Christiansen's AI Policy

If a student uses Grammarly or other AI services for editing/proofing purposes, that student is required to send in both their non-edited version and their edited version to the dropbox. If the student does not send in their original copy, students will receive a zero. No form of AI should be used on discussion board posts. If AI is used on discussion board posts, students will receive an automatic zero on that discussion board.

Note: I don't allow AI in discussion boards since in-person students don't get a chance to use AI to help better their discussions in class. (The grading "item" in the gradebook is the same for in-person discussions and discussion boards so that's my argument for why I don't allow it).
